Three poems by Gervanna Stephens

Ode to my Heart

Thank you heart for
one more day, just
one more day, just
one more day, just
one day, just
one day, just
one day, just

more staying alive.

Love is a New Day

My skin unfurls like sticky tape losing its hold,
lying open,
waiting for purpose after the long night,
spell broken only by the blooming

that is now
that is growing
that is healing
that is chance upon chance
that welcomes the sun
that is
today has just been born.

Instructions for Opening the Heart

1 say a prayer for your self-loathing
2 sacrifice your pride
3 buy a new mirror
4 use it
5 ask Narcissus who’s the fairest
6 offer him your chest as a prize
7 crack yourself open first
8 allow your heart to beat wildly
9 say thank you, THANK YOU
10 now you’re open & ready
